Most major banks and credit unions are part of the network, and once you enroll, you just need an email address or phone number to send and receive money electronically. Zelle® is a great way to send money to friends and family, even if they bank somewhere different than you do.1 Plus, it’s in a lot of banking apps, probably yours! No worries if your bank or credit union doesn’t offer Zelle® yet – you can download and use the Zelle® app until they do.

  1. If you’ve downloaded the bank or credit union’s mobile app, there should be a designated Zelle tab in the app for those that come with the payment service.

A recipient also needs to have a U.S. bank account, but it does not have to be with the same bank as the sender’s account. Zelle and Venmo are both generally safe money transfer apps, as they use authentication, encryption, and monitoring features to make transfers secure. The list of banks that have adopted Zelle keeps growing. In 2021, Zelle reported that nearly 10,000 banks and credit unions across the U.S. were part of its payment network.

But you’re likely to face transaction limits when you send money, and they vary by the financial institution. According to Zelle, the service is currently available in over 1,700 banking apps. To check if this number includes your bank, you can search Zelle’s database. Zelle is generally safe to use, thanks to its data encryption which ensures your data is protected.

How to Set Up Zelle Through Your Financial Institution

Mobile payment services reduce the need to carry cash, which can lower the risk that your money will be stolen. Zelle is a payments network that lets you send money easily, quickly and securely from your bank account to someone else’s bank account. Enter the preferred email address or U.S. mobile number of the recipient. You can send money to almost anyone1 you know and trust with a bank account in the U.S. There may be an issue with the email address or mobile number they have enrolled with Zelle®.

If you have a Zelle account, you don’t need to take any additional steps to receive the money another user sent you. It will automatically be deposited into your bank account. For example, if you went out to a restaurant with a group of friends and wanted to split the bill, one friend could pay. You and your other friends could use Zelle to send your share of the bill to the person who paid.

To receive money to more than one account you will need to enroll a unique U.S. mobile number or email address per account. At least one or more accounts must be with a participating financial institution. Zelle® does not support sending or receiving money between non-participant financial institutions. Zelle doesn’t charge any fees to send or receive money, and it’s unlikely that your bank will charge you a fee to use the service.

You can access your Venmo account using the mobile app or Venmo’s website. You can enroll using your email address or phone number — this will be the information other users will need to send you money. If you don’t already have a Zelle account or your financial institution doesn’t offer Zelle, you can download the app and sign up for an account. Receiving your first payment could take up to three days. Future payments, however, should arrive in your bank account within minutes. If you’re enrolled with Zelle® through your bank or credit union’s banking app or online banking, your financial institution will be able to assist with deactivating your Zelle® profile.

Zelle is free, quick and convenient — but make sure to only send money to people you know and trust.

Additionally, Zelle payments can be much faster than those sent through other P2P apps, appearing in a recipient’s bank account almost instantly with no extra fees. In most cases, once payment is sent, it can’t be canceled. is an independent, advertising-supported publisher and comparison service.

Manage Accounts

Payment requests to persons not already enrolled with Zelle® must be sent to an email address. To send or receive money with a small business, both parties must be enrolled with Zelle® directly through their financial institution’s online or mobile banking experience. For more information, view the Zelle® Transfer Service Addendum to the Wells Fargo Online Access Agreement. Account fees (e.g., monthly service, overdraft) may apply to Wells Fargo account(s) with which you use Zelle®. Zelle® should only be used to send money to friends, family, or others you trust. We recommend that you do not use Zelle® to send money to those you do not know.

You can access Zelle through your bank’s website or mobile app. Once you’re logged in, follow the prompts to enroll your account in Zelle. In 2021, Zelle users sent $490 billion on 1.8 billion transactions, and nearly 3,000 financial institutions joined the Zelle network. If your recipient is already enrolled with Zelle®, the money will go directly into their bank account. You will not be able to reset your password without your CVV. With re-enrolling, your previous profile and Zelle app activity will be deleted, and all pending payments or requests will be canceled.
